The Society for the Social Democratic Tradition was founded in 1996. Among the founding members were Pál Benyó, an engineer, Pál Kertai, a Professor of Public Health, and Péter Kulcsár, a journalist and barrister. They were joined by Róbert Gábor (a former assistant to Social Democrat leader Karoly Peyer), Erno Nagy and Pál Macskásy, one of the members of the Hungarian Resistance from the Second World War.

The Society exists to commemorate and celebrate the traditions and personalities of Hungarian Social Democracy, and to defend the values of openness, democracy and social justice for which Social Democrats have historically fought.

The activities of the society range from commissioning memorials in co-operation with other groups, to writing articles and books, and the formation of discussion groups around a variety of topics.
